If you don't have an AutoPASS prepayment agreement, you can use Ferry Pay. Ferry Pay is recommended if you are a tourist on a road trip in Norway. Ferry Pay is an automatic card payment on ferry journeys. Make your full-price payments on most Norwegian ferries simple and invoice-free.

AutoPASS

AutoPASS is the national automatic payment system for road tolls and ferries. Foreign cards can only use this option if they have an agreement.  

Debit or credit card

There is only possible to pay with a contactless credit or debit card. If you don't have an contactless card please check out "Ferry Pay" where you can add your card to the account.

If you don’t use one of these options, you will not be able to board this ferry

• AutoPASS is the national automatic payment system for road tolls and ferries. 

• The system for ferries is called “AutoPASS for ferry”. 

• The AutoPASS solution has been introduced on virtually all ferries in Norway. 

Payment on ferries is only required for vehicles including driver. Passengers and people travelling without a vehicle travel free of charge. However, there is one exceptions in Troms: 

• Ferry route 182 on the sections from Vengsøy to Musvær, Risøy and Mjølvik. 
  In these cases, passengers must purchase tickets because passenger boats that do not carry vehicles are defined as local boat connections.  

These ferries use AutoPASS for ferry for Norwegian Vehicles. For international vehicles read the chapter about "Foreign cars" to learn how to pay for the ferry.

Troms and Finnmark county council have decided that smaller ferry connections to roadless communities will be free of charge. For Troms county, the following connections will be free of charge from The 1st of July 2022:

• Line 182 Bellvik – Vengsøy This don't apply on the sections from Vengsøy to Musvær, Risøy and Mjølvik. 
  In these cases, passengers must purchase tickets because passenger boats that do not carry vehicles are defined as local boat connections.  
• Line 185 Hansnes – Karlsøy – Vannøy
• Line 186 Hansnes – Reinøy
• Line 188 Mikkelvik – Bromnes
• Line 195 Storstein – Lauksundskaret – Nikkeby
• Line 198 Rotsund – Havnnes – Uløybukt

The other connections in Troms do not meet the criteria set by the Ministry of Transport.  The criteria is to have less than one hundred thousand annual passengers and that there is a roadless community. 

Even though ferry routes will be free of charge, the registration plate will still be read. This is for statistical reasons only. 

AutoPASS for ferry is connected to the vehicle register in Norway. The ferries in Norway generally use the following three methods to identity the vehicle: 

• Photographing the vehicle’s number plate (used in Troms and Finnmark) 

• Registering the AutoPASS tag in the vehicle (not used in Troms and Finnmark) 

• Registering the AutoPASS ferry card (not used in Troms and Finnmark) 

The discount schemes are the same, regardless of which method of registration is used on the ferry.

• The ferry crew photographs the vehicle’s number plate on board. 

• AutoPASS then automatically identifies if the vehicle has a valid discount agreement. 

• The driver of the vehicle is responsible for ensuring that the number plate is visible when driving onto the ferry. The driver must check that the number plate is readable and not covered with road dust, snow or ice, etc. This makes the task easier for the crew on board.   

• If you have a trailer or cargo, the crew on board will measure the total length to ensure the payment is correct. 

• If you have a prepayment agreement for vehicles up to 8.0 m and the actual length including cargo exceeds this, you will not receive the prepayment discount for this journey. 

• If the vehicle is registered with an AutoPASS tag, the ordinary 10% discount will apply.

The Directorate of Public Roads sets the AutoPASS fare scale, which is a national fare scale based on: 

• The length of the ferry journey (the number of zones) 

• The total length of the vehicle including trailer and cargo 

The AutoPASS fare scale states the fare without discount (full price).  

Discount and payment schemes for ferry 

To get an AutoPASS tag, you need to register an agreement with AutoPASS. You can do that here:

When creating a new AutoPASS agreement, you will be asked to choose a toll service provider to issue your AutoPASS tag. It makes no difference which service provider you choose. You will receive the same discount regardless. 

If you already have an AutoPASS tag, you can use that tag and automatically receive a 10% discount on the ferries. You don’t need to do anything to receive this discount.

The agreement or tag cannot be transferred to others. 

• We don’t register the AutoPASS tag on board the ferries in Troms and Finnmark, but rather photograph the vehicle’s number plate. 

• However, everyone with an agreement linked to an AutoPASS tag is obliged to install and use the tag as specified by the issuer.  

• The tag is proof that the agreement has been entered into and is regulated by the agreement between the customer and the issuer. 

• You cannot use the tag in vehicles other than those stated in the agreement. 

• You can use the same AutoPASS tag for road toll stations, tunnels or ferry connections in Norway. 

• You are responsible for the safekeeping and use of your tag. 

• In the event of loss, you are responsible for notifying the issuer of the tag.  

• Please note that tags are not issued by the Troms og Finnmark County Authority or Troms Fylkestrafikk/Snelandia.

AutoPASS

Creating a prepayment agreement for ferry gives you a 50% discount 

You get the largest discount if you have a prepayment agreement for ferry. Please note that you must obtain an AutoPASS before you can create a prepayment agreement (see previous point). You can then create a prepayment agreement for ferry here:

With a prepayment account, you pay a set prepaid amount per vehicle: 

• NOK 3,000 for vehicles measuring 0 – 8.0 m  

• NOK 14,800 for vehicles measuring 8.01 – 17.5 m  

• NOK 28,000 for vehicles measuring over 17.51 m  

When you have such an agreement, the cost of the ferry ticket is automatically deducted from your prepaid amount. Discounts will be granted when you have obtained your tag and payment of your prepaid amount has been registered. 

By logging into My Side, you can check your completed ferry crossings, account balance and invoices, as well as order receipts of journeys. 

What happens when I have used up the prepaid amount? 

• You will automatically receive a notification with payment details when the balance of your account is down to approx. 25% of the total set prepaid amount.  

• If you wish to pay another prepaid amount before you receive a new invoice, feel free to use the customer identification number (KID) on the previous invoice. 

• You can receive an e-invoice in your online bank. 

• If you have used up the prepaid amount but have an AutoPASS tag, you will still receive a 10% discount on the full price. 

Number of vehicles in prepayment agreement 

• Private customers can link a maximum of two vehicles to each private prepayment agreement. Private prepayment agreements give a 50% discount on the full price. 

• Corporate customers may link an unlimited number of vehicles to each corporate prepayment agreement. Corporate prepayment agreements give a 40% discount on the full price. 

Correct information in prepayment agreement 

• All customers are responsible for ensuring that the details stated in the agreement are correct. 

• All customers are responsible for providing notification of any changes to the vehicle data, e.g. change of the vehicles linked to the agreement or extended length of the vehicle (owing to a trailer or cargo). 

Complaints about payment of ferry tickets 

Complaints/claims about ferry tickets must be lodged no later than 30 days after you were informed about the amount charged. Complaints/claims must be directed to Skyttel AS – which manages the payment schemes in AutoPASS. 

NB: Complaints/claims should not be sent to Troms Fylkestrafikk. 

How is privacy protected? 

The purpose of registering personal data about you is to implement the agreement about full price or discounted payment for travel on ferries covered by the national solution for “AutoPASS for ferry”. 

Personal data about you and your transit data will only be used for administration of “AutoPASS for ferry”. 

Transit data will be anonymised and used for traffic statistics. 

Photography is used to document the class or length of the vehicle for the discount agreement, or unregulated transits. Data about each individual transit is erased as quickly as possible after each journey is paid for. 

Upon entering into the agreement, personal data about you will be registered because this is necessary to implement the discount agreement, for correct ticketing and to process any complaints. 

In the event of a dispute over the payment obligation, the data will be stored until the claim has been settled or legally resolved. You can at any time request access to information stored about you. You can at any time request the erasure of stored information about you. You then consent to any consequences this may have for the implementation of the agreement. 

Upon termination of the agreement, all data will be erased in accordance with the current rules relating to privacy and accounting. Upon entering into this agreement, you consent to the transfer of transit data between the issuer and carrier when processing any complaints related to transits.

If you don’t have AutoPASS tag or AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement, you can avoid receiving an invoice and invoice fee in the post after each full-price ferry journey. FerryPay enables you to pay your full-price ferry journeys by credit/debit card. Create a FerryPay agreement

Please note that FerryPay is not an AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement. Consequently, you will not receive discounts or invoices for prepayment. You pay the full price for every ferry journey. The FerryPay agreement applies to all ferries in Norway that are part of the AutoPASS for ferry scheme.
